That would usually get treatments through medication and services of a mental health institution or facilities.

However, advocates of Complementary and Alternative Medicine believe that there are less intensive, more holistic approaches that could be rendered to these patients in conjunction to their medical treatments.

While they do not have approved therapeutic claim and there are no conclusive proofs that these alternatives really work they have been practiced for years and have yielded significant positive results in their own fields. Here are the suggested alternative solutions to mental health care:

Slowing down

Daily stressors contribute to the development of several mental health disorders. In fact, stress itself is considered as a threat to mental health. It disrupts sleep, thinking and rest and it usually affects the way we function everyday. Thus it is suggested to adopt several methods that will help lessen and manage the negative stressors we are exposed to everyday.

Biofeedback – This method is normally used in treating mental health disorders such as phobias, panic and anxiety. This works by controlling the involuntary muscle functioning such as skin temperature and heart rate and by controlling muscle tension.

Massage therapy – This method advances the belief the tapping, rubbing, and brushing the skin and muscle groups could relieve pent up emotions and internal tension. People suffering from severe cases of stress and post-traumatic disorders are usually advised to take get massage therapy regularly.

Visualization – Another method to lessen tension and stress is to redirect the perception and the individual techniques on visualization. This works by entering into a deep state of relaxation where the person could create relaxing and "friendly" images that will contribute to his well-being and lessen the occurrence of unwanted thoughts that are detrimental to one's mental health.

Traditional alternative approaches

Ayurdeva – Imported from Indian Traditional Medicine, Ayurdeva is a holistic approach to caring your mental health. This seeks balance on the body energies rather than on the symptoms that affect the body. This system of traditional treatments includes yoga, a widely practiced alternative solution in the Western world these days. Yoga makes use of postures, exercises, stretches and meditation to achieve the balance of body energies.

Native American approaches – Cleansing rituals and chants are part of the Indian Health Services Programs that are focused on treating people suffering from depression, stress-related disorders and anxiety disorders.

Acupuncture – Used in treating many other ailments in the body, acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medical approach that could also be used as treatment to mental disorders. This makes use of needles with various sizes that are inserted to different pressure points in the body to be able to control its flow of energy.

Diet and Nutrition

According to studies, diet and nutrition affects the manner by which our brains work. If it is deprived with certain nutrients, the brain may fail to function the way it should be.

Vitamin and nutrient intake – According to some studies, there are specific vitamins that our brain needs in order to produce other chemicals that are crucial in maintaining our moods. Also, some vitamins are important in preventing the development of neurological and degenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. Thus, proper intake of these vitamins and minerals plus supplementation of essential nutrients are highly recommended to maintain mental health.

Mental health care does not only need to include medical treatments, support of other approaches is also needed to maximize the possibility of patient recovery.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7972261419031182122.post-14951007214865623492011-07-07T11:21:00.006-04:002011-07-07T11:21:00.640-04:00Great Deals on Uniforms

The home care industry is booming and Home Health Aide's are at the front line. Home Health Aide's are the eyes and ears of the nurse, so why shouldn't they make good money. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the annual yearly wage can be up to 29,390.

I doubt that includes overtime pay, so that is a potential for more money. Also, I must include that the basic criteria to becoming a Home Health Aide, is that you have to be 18 years old and have a basic reading level. The class can be 2-3weeks long and you can start making money. You can find Free Home Health Aide training in your area

These are 5 creative ways a Home Health Aide can make more money:

1) Upgrade your skills: Too many times Home Health Health Aides complain about not getting enough money per hour. However, they do not take the time to improve their clinical skills. A C.P.R class may get you more money or for example, a special training in handling Special Needs patients or T.B.I (Traumatic Brain Injury) patients.

Don't forget being that you have hands on patient care. Becoming a C.N.A (Certified Nursing Assistant) maybe something you can handle. Some CNA's make over 20.00/per hour with Shift differentials and the positions are union. See CNA Classroom

REMEMBER: It's a small sacrifice for a lifetime of paradise.

2)Be available to Work: This may seem obvious to some, but many Home health aides have small children at home and can not take extra work from your coordinator to make more money because of the lack of child care services.

Some times that babysitter (Search & Find the perfect babysitter today with Care4hire.) can really come in handy when you need to make the extra holiday pay.

3) Market Yourself: That may not have sounded right *smile*, but seriously you really need to get yourself out of your shell. Your an experienced specially trained healthcare professional, ACT LIKE IT!

As a Home Health Aide you know how to care for people, so market yourself to your coordinators at the agency you currently work for. So, you can get that exclusive private(V.I.P) case. They may pay more money to take care of a V.I.P client. if anything they might have perks. You never know unless you try.

Post Your FREE Resume Today to attract top employers!

A private case can also be working for yourself. Put basic information about your skills and experience on internet classified ads, like Craigslist to get customers.

Many rich people DO NOT like to spend money. So, they will gladly be happy not to pay a home care agency and pay you out of their pocket, because it's cheaper for them.

It will be a higher wage(because you asked for more money) and the conditions might be better.

4)Work For Multiple Agencies: This can be tricky but, if the home care company does not mind, then your good. If one agency doesn't give you what your looking for in hours call your other agency to make up the difference. There are a few places to start from:

Apply for Healthcare jobs on Snagajob

Home Health aide jobs

personal care aide jobs

5)Think out of the BOX: Every organization needs a health care department. Think about it. People fall, trip, and injury themselves all the time on the job there are medical personnel in all of these business establishments.

My point is that, because you have the health care experience and hands on care you can work for jobs that do not necessarily say "WE NEED HOME HEALTH AIDES". The job might say in the DESCRIPTION, "need someone with health care experience and hands on care" and might indicate that a health care certificate or degree would be preferred.

That is an opportunity waiting, right there. Many non traditional health care companies ask that many of there employees have health care experience. You have a better chance of getting that job, than someone who has business, banking, or retail experience.

Someone I know got a job working in transportation of medical patients, just because she had experience with hands on transferring of patients. She still had to get a C.D.L license, but she probably had a leg up from the competition that only worked driving the transport bus.

They are at an age where death is almost expected – whether it is reading about a friend in the paper or losing a family member. They also face more health problems.

These factors can often lead to depression if older people do not have the appropriate support systems in place. Depression does not have to happen and it is not part of aging. However it can happen and it will prevent an elderly person from living a full life as they are more likely to withdraw into themselves and their memories.

The biggest thing a family can do for their elderly parent or relative is to learn to distinguish between the symptoms of depression and of grief. Grief occurs much more frequently for the elderly as they are more likely to lose loved ones, their health, their mobility, their freedoms, and their careers.

Doctors know grief is painful and can last a long time –sometimes even weeks. It is when these weeks start to turn in to months and the griever’s behaviors start to change that is cause for concern.

Depression in the elderly is more likely to go unchecked and untreated than in any other age group. Often relatives do not visit as often so do not notice how long the person has been feeling sad. Some assume feeling sad is part of aging, although that could not be further from the truth.

Even doctors are often more concerned about the physical well-being of their patients rather than their emotion state. The consequences of these inactions are cause for serious concern. Depressed elderly individuals are at a higher risk for alcohol and drug abuse, illness, and suicide. Their relatives need to be able to discern when a person is depressed and to watch out for the warning signs.

Warning signs for depression in the elderly can be isolation, extreme sadness, loss of interest in hobbies, weight loss, difficulties sleeping, feelings of being a burden to their family, lack of personal hygiene, even possible suicide attempts. Sometimes the signs are harder to see as the depressed elderly individual may not even feel sad.

It may be that they are constantly worrying, wringing their hands, complaining more than usual, experiencing more aches and pains than before, pacing in the home, or even generally lacking energy. These are all signs of depression that relatives should be on the lookout for so they can help the elderly seek the treatment they need and deserve.

Treatment is available and necessary. As the general population of Americans age, the once-called “baby boomers” are now turning into our elderly. The population of elderly is steadily increasing at rates never before seen. It is essential for families and relatives to pull together to help keep an eye on our older loved ones.

Perhaps it is as simple as inviting a parent, grand-parent, or elderly aunt over for supper. Perhaps it is getting involved at the local recreation center and organizing activities for the elderly. Perhaps it is watching over older family members more closely to make sure they are eating properly and taking their medications on time.

Whatever we choose to do, it is our responsibility as the younger generation to look after our elders.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7972261419031182122.post-88540565724850209962011-06-30T11:46:00.002-04:002011-06-30T11:46:00.294-04:00Taking Care of a Alzheimer's Loved oneAlzheimer’s disease is the type of dementia that is more frequently seen among the older population. It is characterized by a worsening of the person’s cognition, particularly in thought, memory and in language, a progressive decline in his ability to perform activities of daily living and may even be accompanied by changes in his behavior.

Dealing with Alzheimer’s can be very stressful for the individual as well as for his loved ones. The progression of the disease may render the person in need of total care as it affects even the most basic skills necessary for his daily existence.

Let’s take mealtimes, for example. For a person with Alzheimer’s, even nutrition may pose as challenge. There are normal physiologic changes that come with aging, such as a diminished sense of taste and smell, and indeed, these may affect the individual’s desire to eat. But when dealing with Alzheimer’s, the person may even forget to eat or in other cases, he may want to eat but has forgotten how to prepare meals.

Through the course of the disease, he may eventually lose his table manners and may have difficulty in swallowing. Agitation and distractibility may also develop. To alleviate these problems, caregivers would often find it necessary to call their loved ones to remind them to eat or instruct them step by step on how to prepare meals.

Small, frequent meals are more in line, and finger foods that are high in calories would be provided. Decreasing the environmental stimuli, by taking extra utensils off the table and using bright, solid-colored plates may address the easy distractibility. And to encourage self- care, the person may be provided with spoons with large handles rather than forks and bowls rather than plates.

Nutrition is just one of the many hurdles when dealing with Alzheimer’s. People with Alzheimer’s disease often need assistance with other activities of daily living such as bathing, toileting and changing.

It is necessary to balance this need for assistance with as much independence as possible. The caregiver must allow the person to do as much as he can while providing the least amount of help. For this, patience and flexibility are crucial.

Dealing with Alzheimer’s can be fulfilling for the caregiver but can be as draining as well. Losing a loved one in this way is heartbreaking. Dealing with Alzheimer’s is one of the most difficult jobs in the world as one may tend to lose sight of his own needs as he cares for his loved one.

When in stressful situations, one needs to take even better care of oneself. It is in these circumstances that people often realize how strong they could really be for their loved ones.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7972261419031182122.post-82341765502954522082011-06-28T12:56:00.001-04:002011-06-29T04:06:04.080-04:00GREAT Ideas for the Home, that you/your patients can not do Without
I really like this toothbrush, because it keeps your toothbrush free from germs before/after brushing. I think its better than just putting the toothbrush on the sink and letting germs multiply, then putting it in YOUR MOUTH. Yikes! The price(19.99) doesn't break the bank and you can take it with you for overnight cases.
This is quite all right, to some extent. But what happens if your parents start having health problems and you are needed to look after them? Here lies the hassle.

This is why it is never too early to consider different long term care options that are available today. It is advisable not to wait for one or both of your parents to get sick before you start considering long term care options. This will only make things worse for you because then, you would have to make a hurried choice as to which long term care option you would want for your parent.

And rash decisions are definitely a no-no here. Thus, do take time to browse through the different long term care options available.

So, what are some examples of these? The first, and quite popular among the long term care options, is home care. Let’s face it: your parents would most likely want to stay inside their own homes. Going into a nursing home somewhat has a negative ring to it, for some reason. But with home care, it would be the nurses going to your home, to care for your parents.

This option usually has the nurses or the home health aides making daily visits, and just accompanying your parents for the rest of the day. Housekeeping and preparing meals would be their responsibility as well. The frequency of these visits need not be daily at all. This can depend on the preference of you and your parents, of course.

Another example of popular long term care options is adult care. These programs would have your parents going to an adult care center, to partake in programs and activities for fellow senior citizens as well. And these adult care programs also cater to the medical needs as well.

Basically, the concept behind these adult care programs is social interaction for their clients.

But if the services of nursing homes are really needed, then you would really need to consider this option. It cannot be denied that this is the least of all long term care options that your parents would want.

This can most likely be attributed to the fact that living in a nursing home connotes a sense of dependency on the staff. This is because nursing homes cater to patients who are recovering from certain diseases or injuries.

These are just some of the long term care options you should consider for your parents. The important thing here is that you and your parents should agree on which method they should have. This way, both your needs will be pacified.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7972261419031182122.post-24859796185687718702011-06-16T11:36:00.000-04:002011-06-16T11:36:00.174-04:00Retirement Planning<iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=hhaheblogscom-20&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=096941949X&fc1=000000&IS2=1<1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="align:left;padding-top:5px;width:131px;height:245px;padding-right:10px;"align="left" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0">This is it, the long haul! You are positive that you have lived a full life, the fullest that you ever can and you are ready to retire. But are you really ready?

You may think there is no imminent need for retirement planning, but there actually is. You see, there are a lot of things to consider before you do get on that platform and accept the retirement package your workplace is offering you. And retirement planning requires one to consider five things.

The first thing to consider when you’re mulling over retirement planning is the decision as to where you would be living. Let’s face it: you would not want to be a burden to your children, especially if they already have families of their own. Sure, visits and such are all right, but living with them is a totally different story. Thus, you should consider this thoroughly when you start your retirement planning. A lot of people prefer to go back to the house or the area where they were raised. And you can do this as well. You can also choose to go to that one place you’ve always wanted to go. Whatever catches your fancy is the goal of retirement planning here.

The second thing to consider is the financial aspect. Do you have enough money to support your plans? Is your pension plan enough to jive with the retirement planning that you have started conceptualizing? No correct answer can ever fit this question because this would totally depend on the goals you have laid out for yourself. Just make sure that you do have enough so that the purpose of retirement planning would not be defeated.

The third thing to consider is whether or not you are indeed ready to retire. You may think this is not something to consider but it actually is. When you retire, you will have a lot of free time on your hands. And you just might find too much time too daunting. So, you should consider this carefully.

The fourth thing is the concept of working after retirement. Now, there are a lot of people out there who opt to continue working light jobs after retiring. And this is not something out of the ordinary. If this is something you are planning to do, you won’t have that much difficulty at all. There are a lot of jobs still available for people after retirement.

The fifth thing to consider is your health. Aside from funds for vacations and the like, you also need to ready yourself regarding your health. This is indeed something you should consider when retirement planning. This way, you won’t be a burden on your family and their families.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7972261419031182122.post-51469890837554296272011-06-09T23:35:00.000-04:002011-06-09T23:35:53.637-04:00The Future of Assisted Living for the Elderly<iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=hhaheblogscom-20&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=0801888174&fc1=000000&IS2=1<1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="align:left;padding-top:5px;width:131px;height:245px;padding-right:10px;"align="left" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0">The society is rapidly evolving, and that’s for sure. So while it seems possible for the assisted living to wane in the near future, chances are it won’t be the case. People are destined to grow old and be exposed to certain incapability that may render them disabled or worthless. With that, assisted living facilities will continue to emerge, yet boasting new lines of developments that people thinking of living on these areas should consider.

So what are these major developments one should expect in assisted living facilities in the near future? What would be the future of assisted living, to simply put?

Well, as what most researches and studies have revealed, a lot of possibilities will soon happen. The first of those would be the expansion of the assisted living services to meet the ever growing society’s demands. You can expect then to see the services offered by all living facilities to remain very well-known knowing that new advancements will be introduced to make their service worth considering.

Of the possibilities revealed, positive changes in the level of personal care, privacy and independence would be made available. And, what primarily remains true is that these services will soon be managed differently, then changing the look and feel of assisted living.

With that, the facilities will soon appear to be more like an upscale community than a line of nursing homes. This of course is good news for many.

What’s further interesting to know about the future of assisted living for the elderly is that more demands from the residents will be granted than before. The senior adults seeking for independence will then be granted with an increased level of control and involvement in the progress of the facility itself. They will be informed as to how, when, and what happens over the management.

This possibility will also increase the residents’ involvement in certain activities that the facility may provide. So while you see a lot of senior adults living in assisted facilities somewhat cold and unfriendly to their peers, it won’t be the case in the future.

People living in these areas would start gathering to watch movies or to have a good talk and this means fun for all.

Finally, with the advancement in science and technology, it is highly probable for all assisted living facilities anywhere in the United States and the world to feature certain advanced technologies.

This would be the major change possible. Thus, expect the facilities to be managed with the help of new devices, then bringing the level of assistance and care to new heights. While these advancements are made, the privacy of the elderly, however, must be maintained.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7972261419031182122.post-75369346360910274262011-05-30T13:01:00.004-04:002011-05-30T13:01:00.450-04:00Depression DefinedDepression can be categorized by many different names. However, no matter what “type” of depression a person has, the symptoms and complications are all the same. You can have major depressive disorder, manic depression, postpartum depression, seasonal effective disorder, or a variety of others. Each type of depression has its own underlying causes, but each exhibits very similar symptoms.

Depression is a very serious medical condition. It can have a very negative impact on how a person feels. They may think negatively and they may withdraw from everyone in their life. People that have clinical depression do not have the ability to function and live their lives as they used to. They no longer enjoy activities that they have always found enjoyable. They may have very long periods of sadness or hopelessness.

Clinical depression is far different than have feelings of sadness or depression for a couple days and then finding your feeling better. Depression can have serious effects on body, mind, thoughts, and the way people behave. Eating patterns, feelings and thoughts, ability to study or work, and interactions with other people can all be affected by depression. The majority of people that are suffering from clinical depression say that they no longer feel like themselves.

Suffering from clinical depression is not a sign of personal weakness or a medical condition that can just be wished away. If a person is truly clinically depressed, they do not have the ability to get themselves together and get over the feelings and condition. Clinical depression can quite often interfere with the ability of a person to seek or want to get help. Clinical depression is a very serious medical condition that lasts for a period of weeks, months, and often even years. It can cause suffers to think about or try to commit suicide.

Depression does not discriminate in regards to its sufferers. People that have depression can be any age, any gender, ethnicity, culture, or religious affiliation. Every year more than 17 million Americans, both men and women, are affected by depression. Clinical depression is a very common medical disorder. However, it is quite often not recognized or goes untreated or undiagnosed.

There are many different types and levels of depression. Depression is diagnosed and treated by psychiatrists and mental health counselors who are trained for this. People that have depression can feel better and get back to their normal lives within a few months if they receive the right treatments. The majority of sufferers start feeling better within a matter of weeks.

Most often, treatment for depression can be done on an outpatient basis. Treatment can include a combination of medications and therapy or counseling. In some severe cases, sufferers may require inpatient treatment. They may need to spend some time in the hospital where they can be closely monitored and watched. One of the most common reasons for inpatient treatment or hospitalization in relation to depression is due to thoughts or attempts of suicide. Close monitoring and medication and intensive therapy are often needed in these situations. Most inpatients are feeling better and able to function outside of the hospital within a few weeks time.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7972261419031182122.post-47405224923247372182011-05-29T13:00:00.002-04:002011-05-28T02:50:38.219-04:00Effectiveness Of Support Groups For Depression And AnxietyWhen dealing with depression and anxiety, group therapy and support groups can help in the recovery process. Group discussions and treatments can help raise self-esteem and lets you know that you are not alone in your affliction.

It is often a relief to know that others are suffering from depression and anxiety and that you are not alone. Depressed people sometimes have feelings of shame and hopelessness and this can increase their depression. Group therapy encourages them to discuss their feelings with others.

They can also learn new ways to cope with their depression and anxiety. Your doctor can help recommend which form of group therapy would benefit you moist. Sometimes it is gender or issue related, so it is best to be in a group that has the same issues. There is no shame in trying out different groups until you find the one that is right for you.

If individual therapy is not for you, then group therapy may be the outlet you need. It can often allow the person to open up more as they are in a room filled with people with the same affliction and experiencing the same emotions and feelings.

Group therapy is often sought after by people who are suffering from depression and anxiety. Therapists have even suggested group therapy as a follow up to treatment for depression. It allows the patient to feel normal and helps them to adjust to the world with their renewed views and emotions. Group therapy can be found for all levels of severity for depression and anxiety.

Support groups are another, more informal form of treatment for depression and anxiety. Support groups are effective in all levels of these illnesses. Functioning normally is not the case when it comes to the moderate to severe forms of depression and anxiety. This is when support groups are needed most. They offer coping skills and moral support when your own negative thoughts are overwhelming.

Social interactions can help you think more positively and want to get out of the house. One of the biggest symptoms of depression and anxiety is the want or need to isolate yourself from the rest of society. Support groups do not allow this. They have weekly meeting and phone buddies to whom you can call whenever in need.

This type of support is as much a relief to you as it is to the other group members. They are helping you and you are helping them, which boosts everyone’s self-esteem and mood. Your group members understand and relate to what you are going through and can help with your treatment, or seek further treatment if necessary.

Support groups are often facilitated by medical professionals. They offer activities for behavior modification, lifestyle changes, health education, counseling, as well as many types of therapies – both individual and group. Support groups often have goals to achieve so that its members can find relief from their afflictions. It is important that all members of the support group participate so these goals can be achieved.

Support groups are an effective treatment to aid in overcoming depression and anxiety. They help you to learn confidence, coping skills, and build new supportive friendships. With all this said, your doctor should also still be consulted. S/he will be able to help you monitor your affliction and make sure your treatment is the most effective it can be.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7972261419031182122.post-85782947489075317202011-05-28T14:15:00.001-04:002011-05-28T14:15:00.524-04:00Retirement PlanningThis is it, the long haul!

But is this true or not?

Recent as well as previous researches have proven that nutrition (or the lack of it) does have effects on how a person's brain functions, his moods and his behaviors.

Say for example, a person who has skipped a meal is observably weak, out of focus and irritable. This case worsens when extended to a certain period of time when the person becomes severely moody and indifferent to the demands of his environment thus showing decreased speed in reaction time.

These behaviors occur due to the lack of nutrition supply to the brain. The brain requires high energy and nutrient supply. It comprises, in fact, 20% to 30% of all the energy consumption of the body during rest periods. Thus, any change in diet or nutrition level of the body directly reflects in the mental functioning.

Chronic energy deprivation, such as the case of malnourished people, results to the eventual shutting down of the body by decreasing its activities and redirecting all its energy sources towards the systems that require higher energy supply.

This results to altered levels of activities, changes in hormonal levels, lessened immune system efficiency and transport of nutrients and oxygen to certain body parts, all of which could directly or indirectly influence mental health. People with extremely low nutrition are more likely to become sad, depressed and emotional as compared with those who have adequate nutrition.

Newborn babies and fetuses are also susceptible to brain damage if they are subjected to lack of necessary nutrition. The type and degree of damage is dependent on the severity of malnutrition. Also, malnutrition among babies has proven to produce low level of intelligence, cognitive defects as well as functional abnormalities.

Protein, carbohydrates, lipids and vitamins all have individual effects on the brain. Lack of supply of these necessary nutrients result to alterations in the activities of the neurotransmitters, a chemical component in the brain that transmit one nerve impulse from one nerve cell to another.

Malfunctioning of the transmitters could influence a person's mood, thinking and even sleep patterns. Additionally, deficient levels of nutrition may result to nerve cell damage that could disrupt cognitive and mental functions.

Neurotransmitters are partly made of amino acids, the building block of protein. Trytophan for example, makes up the neurotransmitter serotonin. If the required amino acid is lacking, the functions of the neurotransmitter could not be executed affecting the normal functioning of the brain.

In case of deficient protein consumption and failure to supply the necessary amino acid to make serotonin, the body would experience low mood and perhaps, aggression. On the other hand, diseases that could cause the build up of certain amino acids could lead to brain damage thus affecting the mental health of an individual.

Mood regulation could also be associated with the sufficient intake of dietary fats. Some studies have yielded inconclusive results on the correlation between serotonin level and intake of omega-3 fatty acids, a certain type of fat found only in white fish to stress and symptoms of bipolar disorder (a mood disorder having the representations of both mania and depression).

Directly or indirectly, nutrition has an effect on mental health. Changes in the nutritional intake of a person could lead to alterations in the mental health and vice versa.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7972261419031182122.post-35828220483129357492011-05-26T13:26:00.005-04:002011-05-28T02:52:48.372-04:00Alcohol Abuse And Depression
Research has shown that up to ten percent of depressed people also abuse alcohol. Many people abuse alcohol when depressed because it makes the sad feelings go away. However this is only a temporary “fix”. People abusing alcohol think they are treating their depression when in fact large amounts of alcohol can actually worsen the illness.

Depressed people do not realize that the more times they drink alcohol, the more they are increasing their tolerance levels to alcohol. This then requires even more alcohol to induce the same feelings of relative happiness that the first few drinks used to achieve. This is how alcohol can become addictive and gets to the abuse stage.

Unfortunately both depression and alcohol abuse are more common than ever before. While 10% of depressed people also abuse alcohol, up to 40% of alcohol abusers show signs of depression. These numbers are growing every day. These numbers keep growing as more and more people become addicted to alcohol and/ or become depressed due to the increasing levels of stress in today’s’ world.

Often the symptoms of alcohol abuse and depression can be interchanged. Both illnesses show changes in behavior such as becoming increasingly impulsive, increasing acts of violence and aggression, increasing isolating tendencies, and impaired judgment.

Both illnesses can lead to problems in the marriage and result in the breakdown of the family. One must also be concerned with the fact that depressed people are more likely to cause accidents within the home. There is also an increased link between alcohol abuse, depression and suicide. This is really a cause for concern for these individuals.

Research also indicates that the abuse of alcohol can be genetic. Children of alcoholic parents are much more likely to suffer from alcoholism themselves. Their alcohol tolerance levels are much higher than the average child the same age.

The same research indicates that alcohol abuse affects chemicals in the brain. These chemicals affect the way the brain processes information. Depression is also immediately inherited from parents to child, as well as from relatives.

Trying to determine if an individual is depressed, abusing alcohol or both is difficult. Many of the symptoms are the same for each illness. Insomnia, waking up frequently, poor appetite, sleepiness, and feelings of disorientation are symptoms of both illnesses.

To complicate the situation, many people who abuse alcohol become depressed over time. Doctors will first treat the alcoholism and see if the person’s mood improves; if it does not then they will treat the depression.
Alcohol is in a set of drugs known as sedative hypnotics. Other drugs in this category are tranquilizers.

Many depressed people, especially young adults, abuse other drugs as well as alcohol. Some of the antidepressant medications on the market today also contain a sedative. Thus if combined with alcohol, the person becomes severely sedated and can even stop breathing.

The danger of combining alcohol with drug treatment for depression is one doctors know well. This is why they tend to treat the alcoholism before the depression.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7972261419031182122.post-65060946379802267722011-05-25T18:15:00.006-04:002011-05-28T02:57:00.907-04:00Getting Ready For Summer? They feel to stay young forever is not going to happen. Science has advanced and it has been discovered methods to use to stay younger is quite possible. Studies show changing the habits or lifestyle makes a huge difference between staying young forever and feeling old before your time.

If you smoke quit. If you don’t smoke then don’t start. Smoking increases the free radicals leading to cell death, damaging your lungs. You will have breathing complications including difficulty exercising.
Have a healthy diet that includes your essential fatty acids. It is recommended you eat fish twice a week so you get enough omega-3, omega-6, and DHA.

These help your body cells be flexible and permeable. It has been proven they are an important part of the cells in the nervous system, blood vessels, and skin. They help to fight wrinkles and the brain. Oily fish is the considered the best for the diet.

Include fresh vegetables and fruits in your diet. The vegetables that are orange and yellow are high sources of beta-carotene, which is antioxidant that fights free radicals in the body. They help the body’s cells stay healthy and fight off cancer. Beta-carotene is converted into Vitamin A, which is great for your skin and eyes.
Maintain a healthy weight.

When you are overweight you hurt your joints and put extra stress on your heart. When you are overweight you also have other health complications such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease. Being underweight is not good for the body either.

When you are underweight, the muscles and bones are robbed of the benefits of building stronger as well as energy. It is damages your kidneys and leads to early menopause and osteoporosis.

Exercise helps to work your heart. Cardiovascular exercise makes your heart pump and become a stronger muscle. When you keep your heart in good shape it lessens the chances of heart disease and stroke. You also lower your blood pressure helping the blood flow easier through the vessel, skin, brain, and digestive systems creating a healthy youthful body.

Build up your muscles. Start a weight training regimen of training twice a week. Strong muscles lead to strong bones helping you reduce the risks of breaking them easily. With age, it is easy to break bones so the stronger muscles and bones help you create a stronger youthful body.

As you get older, your sense of balance is effective. Combat the loss of balance practice yoga or dance. The neuromuscular exercise helps your body and brain remain in contact and builds the communication that is often lost with age resulting in balance problems.

To keep your brain active and sharp, do crossword puzzles, brain teasers, and math problems and read to stimulate the brain. Research has shown older adults who regularly stimulate their brain are less prone to the mental deterioration associated with memory loss.

Laughter goes along way. Make a younger attitude that is filled with laughter to keep you feeling youthful.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7972261419031182122.post-13451821481541879942011-05-25T13:05:00.005-04:002011-05-28T01:45:07.562-04:00Understand being a Single Parent and Your Mental Health
Extramarital pregnancy, divorce, and abandonment of one parent are some reasons why there are single parents. What most people don’t know is, these occurrences are life-changing as they can be traumatic for the single parent and the child, making them often misunderstood. That makes the study of a single parent’s psychology and mental health important.

Studies have reported that there are more child and adolescent problems for households with single parents rather than those with the “normal” set-up. While most single parents may disagree, it is understandable why the statistics say so.
For one, a single parent has limited time in his hands. Managing a household with another person is difficult in itself. What more if you have to do it alone. That’s why it is important for a single parent to make a daily or weekly schedule of his activities. That way, he can find time to do all the things that need to be done, including some time off for leisure and relaxation.

Also, a parent may have financial problems, as he is the only one earning for the family. He must learn to save his money by learning to set aside a portion of it as it comes. Also, he must learn to make a few sure investments.

Of course, if one becomes a single parent because of a divorce or death of the spouse, there are more problems that he needs to face. It is normal for him to feel sad or depressed, so allow him to have some time to grieve. Friends can help in the moving on process. This is also devastating for the child, so the parent must learn to show his support to the child instead of focusing on his grief alone. Parent and child can help each other to shorten grieving time.

Lastly, the single parent may feel alone and rejected. So he must learn to nurture himself. Eat and sleep well. Exercise on a regular basis, or engage in a sport that you like. Join a church group or association in your community.

To minimize incidence of child problems like school dropouts, early pregnancy and juvenile behavior, a single parent must learn to communicate well with his child. Spend more quality time with him. Engage in an activity that you both can enjoy. Regularly monitor his progress in school.

What resources are available for the single parent? He may join a group or organization of single parents like him. In this venue, members can share and discuss their common problems and experiences such as coping with divorce and raising kids. Educational activities like lectures by professionals and training seminars as well as other recreational activities are organized to help the single parent cope with his situation.

There are also websites which support single parents. Many parent resources can be found in the internet like chat rooms, forums, newsletters, articles and other forms of literature that they can share.

Knowing single parent psychology and mental health will make us understand single parents and their children better. Being a single parent is a challenging job. With limited time and finances, he has to cope with the challenge of raising a child as well. It boosts confidence for people who need newer self image while it prevents the aggravation of physical illnesses for some. While nearly all of the research on exercise is focused on demonstrating positive effects on the physical body, there is a growing mass of research that seeks to prove that exercise is good for mental health as well.

A study conducted by the researchers from the Duke University along with other similar studies proved that exercise could help treat depression for 60% of all the participants. This result is similar with the total number of participants who are using medications for their treatment from depression.

However, you don’t have to be a sufferer of a mental illness before you benefit from exercise. You can boost your sense of well-being while walking on the treadmill or by combining yoga and meditation. In a way, exercise could be used as a potential medium for preventing the development of psychological and emotional conditions.

There are three dimensions at which we could look at when examining the benefits of exercise in the mental wellness of a person. Among the less well known is the biological aspect.

One theory suggests that physical workout or exercise could stimulate a part of the brain to release endorphins. Activities that are more likely to trigger the release of endorphins are swimming, cross-country skiing, running, bicycling, aerobics and sports like soccer, football and basketball.

Endorphins are comparable to opiates in a way that they resemble morphine. Endorphins could work in two ways- as a pain reliever (which is produced in response to the stresses brought about by physical work or stress) and as an enhancer of well-being. There are, however, no definite data that could support this claim.

On the other hand, exercise is also found to trigger the release of hormones norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin. All these are known to help improve mood and is actually the main effect of Prozac, a known antidepressant.

Increase in these hormones could be best observed in a condition known as "runner's high". This feeling during after an acute exercise is directly linked to the increased number of the said hormones. However, there are still no conclusive studies proving that improvements on mood could be facilitated for a longer period of time.

Another is the physiological aspect. Nearly all of the feelings we associate with mental wellness come from our personal evaluation of the way our body feels. Say for instance, if you perceive a stomach pain as a form of stress then you will feel stressed (and sometimes even depression) every time your stomach aches. Likewise, exercise could render feelings such as muscle relaxation and easier breathing which we associate with "feeling better". While this correlation is yet to have a better scientific grounding, we still could not deny the fact that muscle tension and increased blood flow go together with physical fitness.

No one knows yet how exactly exercise affects mental health. But it is common among patients to view exercise as a good medium to elevate their moods.

In fact, according to a survey conducted by the Charity Mind nearly two-thirds of all people who said that they use exercise to relieve symptoms of stress and depression believe that exercise actually works for them. The scientific community is yet to understand how this happens though and for now, it remains a truth that people benefit from exercise for mental health.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7972261419031182122.post-88739499488348163172011-05-24T09:20:00.002-04:002011-05-24T09:20:00.485-04:00Great Tips on ways to Cover Dark Circle Shadows and Puffiness
Having puffy eyes, dark circles, and shadows under your eyes. When you get older it happens more often. It is just one of the many things that happen with age yet there are products that help reduce the signs of aging other than having to rely on expensive surgery.
One of the first things you will need to do is reduce your consumption for sodium. Add Vitamins A, C, and E to your diet. Make sure you are getting enough sleep as well.
There are many methods that grandma used and swears works. Some of the popular ways to remove the puffiness and darkness are to apply tea bags, fresh cut cucumbers, and Preparation H. The tea bags and cucumbers to work but stay away from the Preparation H since it will cause eye damage.
When locating products for puffy eyes, look for ingredients with horse chestnut that promotes micro-circulation. Aloe that soothes and hydrates. Ivy to decongests and eliminate excess water. Caffeine to decrease the swelling. Green or white tea to soothe the redness and inflammation. Cucumber to reduce the inflammation. Licorice to reduce the puffiness and soothes the irritation.
When you are seeking a longer fix there are injectable wrinkle fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane used by experts. The filler is injected around the puffy area to remove the indentation as the result of the puffiness. There is also Botox that is commonly used to smooth out the fine lines and wrinkles. They all have the same effect of creating a younger appearance to the eyes. The methods last about nine months when you need to have the procedure repeated for the cost of several thousand dollars each time.
Some people have the daily morning darkness referred to as “raccoon eyes” that is near the underside of their eyes making the person appear tired, older, and drug out. The fact some people have it naturally even with getting the right amounts of sleep lead them to seek alternative products to remove the dark circles.
Look for products with Vitamin K to stimulate the blood flow and repair the broken capillary walls near the eyes. Vitamin A, C, and E to reduce the free radicals and to increase the antioxidant protectors. Peptide technology to promote collagen synthesis to firm the eye tissue. Hesperidin to strengthen the capillaries to reduce the leaking and reduce blood pooling as well as improving the micro-circulation in the eye region. Konica acid to lighten the skin areas from discoloration. Eyebright, pearls and light diffuser to visually filter light and to brighten and illuminate the eye regions.
To camouflage the darkness use a peach or salmon colored concealer. For the puffiness use nylon concealer brush to add a thin layer of a product in the creases below the puffy area. After you add a concealer a few shades darker than your foundation. Apply the foundation before the concealer.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7972261419031182122.post-50953792206617435802011-05-24T02:11:00.001-04:002011-05-24T02:12:10.838-04:00Thinking about a job in mental Health? Here's what you Need to Know
Now that you’ve finished your medical degree, it’s time to find a job. In hospitals or medical facilities, nothing can be more difficult and demanding as mental health jobs. That is why we often see a great demand of these jobs when we make job searches in the internet or in advertisements. Also, the increase in mental patients in most facilities and institutions contribute to the increase in demand for these jobs.

Post Your FREE Resume Today to attract top employers!

Contrary to what most people think, there are many aspects of mental health. In the field of psychology alone, there are other areas of specialization such as neuropsychology, geropsychology and health psychology. There is also what we call school psychologists. These are the counselors in most schools and universities. Another kind is called developmental psychology, which focuses on a man’s psychological development through life. There is also what you call industrial psychology, which focuses on the mechanics of employees in the workplace.

Mental health nurses are those who have graduated the regular nursing course. During the course training, they need to specialize in mental health in order to qualify as mental health nurses.

Doctors who specialize in mental health are commonly called psychiatrists. Each state would impose qualifications before one can practice. For most countries, they are those who graduated the regular physician’s course, and a few years of specialization in psychiatry. There is also a field called psychotherapy, which deals more on counseling and therapy instead of the clinical aspect of treatment.

Mental health jobs can also be found in medical schools where mental health courses are offered.

Aside from those mentioned, there are other jobs in the mental health field. Some of them are medical or hospital social workers, psychiatric technicians and other hospital personnel. Some mental health centers hire other hospital personnel such as dieticians, physical therapists, pharmacists, dentists, laboratory staff, radiologists, speech pathologists, optometrists, and many others.

As for the pay, the salary range for these jobs is quite wide. Depending on a person’s education and experience, one can earn twice as much as those who work in the same position. And like jobs in other industries, companies prefer applicants who are better qualified and trained. This can be seen in their educational background and previous job experiences.

Aside from the skills necessary to carry out their jobs, an unwritten qualification is added, and that is, their ability to care for the patients and listen to their needs. Mental health patients have extra needs than ordinary medical patients. That is why there is a need for mental health workers to be more patient and understanding than workers in other medical fields.

Health care industries shall continue to expand in the coming years. This means that more mental health jobs shall be available. If you want a job in the mental health field, it is easy to find one. You just have to know where to find them. Make a search for jobs wanted within your area. You can visit the website of the medical facility or company that you wish to work in to see their job opportunities. Or you may register in a job support website. These websites not only provide you with a list of the jobs available, they also provide articles on career advice, industry news and articles, and tips on job hunting and interview.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7972261419031182122.post-18629273731505158222011-03-06T04:38:00.002-05:002011-05-25T03:05:21.952-04:00Hobbies for the Elderly to Maintain Mental Health<iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=hhaheblogscom-20&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=B00080Z5G6&fc1=000000&IS2=1<1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="align:left;padding-top:5px;width:131px;height:245px;padding-right:10px;"align="left" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0"> Elderly people respond to mental health differently than younger people. They are prone to developing more psychological disorders and can cope less effectively to triggering factors of mental impairments.

Let's first take a look at how an old person lives-

Retiring could be one of the most enjoyable but dreaded years in the life of a person. Anybody who no longer has definite roles to take apart from being an older member of the society begins to question their own importance, sometimes even existence. Since a retired person no longer holds a job, he is free to use his time on any activity he chooses. The problem though is that he cannot establish a certain activity that would make life for him enjoyable for the rest of his life. He also feels that he is no longer important since his children who used to depend on him have already taken up their own lives, sometimes living him without company.

On most cases, people who are old are alone. They sulk into life without purpose, without direction, without the sense of worth. Slowly, they will have experiences that would negatively affect their mental health. They then become depressed, lonely and more prone to developing psychological disorders. Since the society give too little importance to the elderly people, it tends to disregard them. Until they become debilitated enough due to sickness, disorders and old age that the society begins to notice them. But then, by that time, it is already too late.

The usual life of the elderly is marked by the lack of support that will introduce them to activities that will revitalize their lives. They can no longer put up with their old activities since their bodies, by nature, are deteriorated enough to hinder them from moving and performing like they did before. However, old age should not always be like this. Old people should try to look for newer activities in their lives that would make the rest of their days enjoyable and worthwhile.

They say "you cannot teach old dog new tricks". This is a myth. An old person who is willing to learn will learn by all means regardless if his body or his mind limits him. Here are some of the hobbies that an elderly could do to increase his mental health:

Keeping your brain active will make you feel healthy

For some people, the mere fact that they are thinking and can still conceptualize thoughts drive them to be crazy about life. It is never too late to learn to write and for people who used to enjoy writing during their younger years, it is never too late to bring back their attitude towards literature.

Reading could also be a fun activity that would easily let the time pass. Old people who enjoy reading are apparently happier than those who sat idly on their couches throughout the day.

The music of your life

Your fingers may not have the same dexterity they had when you were younger but this doesn’t mean that you can no longer enjoy music. You can learn to play music instruments. The piano, for example, requires too little energy output but the internal satisfaction it provides is high. Also, listening to music could make you think of familiar thoughts that would drive you through the memory lane. This would allow you to meditate on your life. For most people, knowing the fact that they have lived their life well make them satisfied and at peace with themselves. Internal peace is central to achieving the right balance in life.

Pick up your old hobbies

Did you enjoy gardening as a kid or collecting things as a teenager? You can bring back those old hobbies. After all, you already have enough investments in the past that it would no longer be hard for you to start again.

It is often the case of losing the zest for life when one gets old. But through regaining your appetite for life through hobbies for elderly, you might find again that life is worth living for. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7972261419031182122.post-51150519267686320002011-02-25T00:05:00.000-05:002012-10-13T01:19:42.953-04:00WelcomeThis Is the first of many postings on the Home Health Aide Blog.
